What I learned about French culture on this trip
Travel will always hold an extraordinary place in my heart.
From the minute I touched down in France, I enjoyed every minute of my trip.
The breathtaking views are something I will always remember. Oh, and the food! Yummy! I love my food! I overate in France.
There were many times I had to loosen my belt because my tummy was so full. Haha.
Hey, you can’t blame me! The food in France looks pretty and tastes delicious.
I admire and love the rich culture of France.
I remember switching on the television in my hotel room one evening and flipping through the channels. I could not find a channel that had any English on it. All was in French. At that moment I was irritated.
However, it made me realize how proud and deeply invested the French are in their language and culture. And that has to be admired.
One afternoon, we were passing a bakery. We had to go in as the aroma was extremely inviting.
I saw a mouth-watering pastry with fresh cream on the top. I went up to the counter and asked the assistant behind the counter a question about the contents of the pastry.
Then in English, he answers, “Talk in French, I do not speak English.”
His tone was not friendly in any way.
One can get upset that he did not have good customer service, however, this goes to show the respect and commitment the French have to uphold their language and culture.
After all, I was a visitor in France. I needed to have more respect.
It is like me coming to your home for a week and not respecting your house rules.
The French taught me that one needs to be extremely proud of one’s culture and when one is a visitor one needs to ensure one respects the culture by attempting to learn more about their way of living.
This includes the language.
I returned home a much wiser person.
As much as many people speak English, I could not assume English is the accepted language in a country like France.
Thank you, France for being a holiday destination with a lot of learning and admirable culture.
I will be back!
Have you visited France?
